Remedial Massage After Care
- After a massage you may experience muscle soreness for a day or two. Don't be alarmed, this is a normal and expected outcome as proper posture and muscular health is being restored.
- You may experience headaches or dizziness after your massage. This is a sign that the body is releasing stored stress and tension.
- For aching muscles and tenderness – ICE is the best anti-inflammatory you will find. Before reaching for the tablets... grab the frozen peas instead!
- Wrap them in a tea towel (do not place directly onto the skin as this can cause ice burn).
- Place over the area of discomfort that has been worked on.
- Leave on the area for not more than 20 minutes in any one hour and at least 1 hour between applications.
- Drink plenty of water and/or herbal teas (caffeine free) to assist the body in elimination of waste matter and toxins.
- A massage treatment is detoxifying and the effects of alcohol, caffeine and/or cigarette smoke can greatly reduce the benefits. Please try to avoid these within 12 hours of your massage.
- Eat light meals. Fresh and natural foods are advisable, as over refined and processed foods add to the toxicity of the body.
- Enjoy rest and relaxation. Refrain from heavy exercise after your massage. Though you may not be experiencing pain anymore, a spasm may still be present since spasms do not necessarily cause pain. If you ask too much of your muscles too quickly, it is likely that you will re-enter the pain-spasm-pain cycle. Please be gentle with yourself and begin a sensible program of gentle stretching and exercise when normal muscle tone and range of motion has been restored.
- Become more aware of habitual postures or actions that caused you pain and discomfort in the first place and let your Massage Therapist know what these are. Your body awareness will greatly assist in healing you to lead a pain-free life on a daily basis.
- Stretching is a great tool to rehabilitation and body conditioning, please try to follow the stretches prescribed to you as they will help.
- Get a good nights rest. Most of the internal 'repair work' is carried out during the hours of our sleep. Do your best to get a good nights sleep after your massage for maximum benefit.
